Summary - 9/9/2005 |
Game of the Week
Clackamas |
|
Here is the first week's ranking for Oregon High School Football. I expect the first two weeks of this year's ranking to be as inaccurate as the first two weeks of last year's ranking. As always, the ranking is based on earned calculations. It does not reflect the opinion of anyone. In week one, we discover that South Eugene, Southridge, and Barlow may be better teams than they've been given credit for. I Was There - Benson at Oregon CityI've watched a lot of years of High School football and Oregon City's Brad Tinsley is the best 10th grade quarterback I've ever seen. Oregon City stacked up 393 yards of offense against Benson's 264 yards of offense in a game that had one of those unbelievable Hollywood endings. But it was real. As running back for Oregon City, Bryan Borgmeier accumulated 93 yards running and 51 yards receiving while playing less than three quarters. Joe Wolf accumulated 32 yards receiving and 61 yards running. Cody Henrickson received for 74 yards. Brad Tinsley is fun to watch. He ran six times for 67 yards. Did you ever see one of those professional football games where the receiver caught a touch-down pass while dragging his toes across the sideline? Tinsley threw one of those tonight too. Oregon City's frustrations included a dozen penalties and even more dropped passes. Their mistakes nearly cost them the game and surely kept them from getting the kind of attention they deserved. To top it off, they lost a superstar when Bryan Borgmeier left the game in the third quarter. Oh, but what an ending. The drive began 70 yards from the goal line with only a minute twenty to go and Oregon City was behind by six. Tinsley looked like a pro, driving down field with a no huddle offense; and without his star running back. With smart plays and good use of the sideline, they arrived at Benson's 22 yard line with just 0.7 seconds remaining. Tinsley lobbed a beautiful pass to the corner of the end-zone where Cody Hendrickson caught it. Now they're behind by one, with no time left on the clock. The job fell to Justin Boyles who had accumulated a total of three yards in four running attempts. The teams lined up, everyone knowing there would be no overtime; no second chance. One single play would determine who won and who lost. The ball was snapped. In one smooth motion, Tinsley handed off to Boyles, who drove left through the line and ran across for two points. Oregon City won, 22 to 21. That was one of the funnest games I've ever watched... 0.7 seconds to go... behind by six... WOW.
